Price: £305 / $376

The NEC P221W is a high quality, compact monitor in the budget end of the spectrum aimed at graphics professionals. It uses an S-PVA panel with a wide colour gamut, great viewing angles and superb contrast.

It’s slightly restrictive connectivity and relatively high price do mean that if you’re looking for an all-round monitor that is also good for photographic purposes you might want to consider the Dell UltraSharp 2312 before you buy.

  • 1680 × 1050 (16:10 aspect ratio) native resolution
  • 1000:1 contrast ratio
  • 300 cd/m2 brightness
  • DVI-D, VGA, S-Video

The S-PVA 22” panel in the NEC P221W makes this monitor an affordable option for photographers on a budget. To look at, the NEC P221W is fairly plain but pleasing to the eye.

One of the key selling points for colour-critical work is that the NEC P221W offers 30-bit colour. To use this to full effect some fine calibration will be needed. While this is perfect for photography it will take a reasonable amount of know-how to set your display up to make full use of this.

The wide colour gamut is another attractive feature of the NEC P221W. It boasts 92% of the NTCS colour range complimenting the 16.7 million colour support. This combination gives this monitor saturated, vibrant and accurate colour reproduction, deal for photographers.

One area where the NEC P221W probably surpasses all others in this price range is the contrast. NEC quotes the standard 1000:1 static contrast ratio but tests have shown it to be as high as 1146:1.

Further enhancing this is the ability to adjust the black level on the NEC P221W monitor. This changes the level of black without affecting the backlight levels. This nice feature isn’t found on many displays and is a welcome addition to any monitor used for work with graphics.

The practicalities of a monitor of this price and calibre are all present. It’s fully adjustable and offers the choice of portrait or landscape modes. All the movements (pivot, swivel and tilt) are smooth and pleasant to change.

Being an S-PVA panel the viewing angles are excellent with little loss of colour even at 178°.

The NEC P221W has four preset modes that anyone doing colour-critical work will find useful – Native; Programmable; Option 1 (sets the white point to clear base); and Option 2 (sets the white point to blue base). The hardware calibration of this monitor also allows the white point and gamma to be adjusted.

One issue with the NEC P221W monitor is the limited connectivity offered. DVI-D, VGA and S-Video ports are all available but there is no DisplayPort or HDMI port.

This is mainly an issue for those looking for an all-round monitor as many games consoles etc make use of HDMI connections. This can be overcome with a simple adaptor but shows that NEC is really targeting the NEC P221W at graphics professionals.

There are also no USB ports.

While this monitor has pretty good response times it has a high input lag and suffers from inverse ghosting (a trail left behind a moving object) which makes this monitor less than ideal for gamers, especially for games that demand a lot from their graphics.

At 1680 × 1050 native resolution this monitor is capable of displaying full HD footage. One more reason why those looking for a quality entertainment or gaming monitor as well as one for photography might want to think about alternatives.

In summary, the NEC P221W monitor can’t be beaten for colour reproduction and accuracy in its price range. Its wide colour gamut and 10-bit LUT make it a great, inexpensive alternative to other super pricey monitors aimed at graphics professionals.

However, this monitor is aimed, almost exclusively, to those doing colour-critical work. The lack of video ports and full HD mean the NEC P221W isn’t the best all-round monitor out there.
