Put simply the Eizo ColorEdge CG223W 22" Widescreen LCD Display is one of the best monitors for photography on the market. It offers best in range performance and is supported by some great calibration software. We like this monitor, it isn't cheap (so we marked it down a little) but you certainly get what you pay for.

Put simply the Eizo ColorEdge CG223W 22″ Widescreen LCD Display is one of the best monitors for photography on the market – but it costs a bit. It offers best in range performance and is supported by some great calibration software. We like this monitor, it isn’t cheap (so we marked it down a little) but you certainly get what you pay for.

The Eizo ColorEdge CG223W is specifically designed and built to meet the high standards of the press and media industries. As such it comes out of the box with factory calibrated gamma and brightness stabilisation. It includes ColorNavigation software, colour deficiency simulation, 16-bit internal processing and 10-bit simultaneous display support.

  • 1680 × 1050 native resolution
  • 950:1 contrast ratio
  • 270 cd/m2 brightness

One of the most important features to look for in photography monitors is a wide colour gamut (range) and the Eizo ColorEdge CG223W monitor doesn’t disappoint. The Eizo ColorEdge CG223W reproduces 95% of the Adobe RGB spectrum and a preset mode to reproduce the smaller sRGB spectrum.

The story doesn’t end there though. There are also preset modes for reproducing the PAL/SECAM, HDTV, SMPTE-C, and DCI colour spaces. Ideal if you’re also going to be dealing with images for broadcasting or digital cinema.

The Eizo ColorEdge CG223W display’s Delta-E is also superb. The next generation DisplayPort input terminal allows the monitor to display 10-bit colour resulting in the ability to display over 1 billion colours simultaneously. This is 64 times the more usual 16.7million colours meaning the Eizo ColorEdge CG223W has smooth colour gradations and a reduced Delta-E.

This monitor also has a digital uniformity equalizer (DUE) which combats fluctuations in chroma and brightness across the screen. This means that there is never a Delta-E difference of more than 3 across the screen.

As well as the DUE, the Eizo ColorEdge CG223W 22 monitor features another EIZO developed quality. It uses a 3D LUT which adjusts colour on just one table for red, green and blue, as opposed to the more common 1D LUT which adjusts colour on separate tables for each. This features means the Eizo ColorEdge CG223W 22 is much better at combining RGB and improves the monitor’s ability to display neutral gray tones.

If you have a dual monitor setup or run a colour-critical business the Eizo ColorEdge CG223W 22 monitor has another great feature. The hardware calibration inside the monitor not only results in no loss of tonalities but ensures the display is uniform over different units of this monitor.

The calibration of the Eizo ColorEdge CG223W 22 is quick and easy. Once values for brightness, white point and gamma are input the ColorNavigator software uses many other measurement devices to create an ICC profile in a matter of minutes.

This monitor is so clever it can even compensate for people with colour blindness.

The icing on the cake is the range of screen adjustments available to you. The “Flexstand” allows the display to be tilted, swivelled and rotated 90° for portrait viewing. Its height can also be adjusted 174mm and the bearing-less design means that this is not just easy to do but reduces mechanical wear. The Eizo ColorEdge CG223W 22 comes with a five-year warranty.

The only negatives we can see with this amazing monitor are minor complaints. The resolution could be a bit higher and, of course, the price is potentially a bit of an obstacle. However, the Eizo ColorEdge CG223W 22″ monitor is well worth the extra expense.
